Sista flygningen

Det amerikanska rymdskyttelprogrammet må vara nedlagt och inga fler rymdskyttlar kommer att lämna Jordens atmosfär. Men det är faktiskt inte helt slutfluget. I tisdags så levererades rymdfärjan Discovery till Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum i Washington. Innan landningen på Washington Dulles flygplats så passade man på att visa upp sig på låg höjd för presidenten och alla Washingtonbor.

NASA har nyttjat två stycken kraftigt modifierade Boeing 747 för att transportera rymdskyttlar från de flygplatser man landat på till uppskjutningsrampen i Florida.

NASA 911 made its final flight Feb. 8, 2012. The jumbo jet's final mission was a short flight lasting only about 20 minutes from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base to The Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility adjacent to Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, Calif.

NASA 905 will ferry the shuttles to the cities of their final display venues. Those sites include the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington, D.C. (Discovery), the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City (Enterprise), the California Science Center in Los Angeles (Endeavour). Shuttle Atlantis will move to the visitor center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and will not be ferried via the SCA.

Flygplanspotters i Washington fick en unik möjlighet att ta bilder på en flygplan/rymdskeppskombination som få fått se i luften.

Exakt när och hur Endeavour kommer att transporteras till California Science Center är oklart. Atlantis kommer dock att få nöja sig med en kort marktransport till Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center.

Själv så ser jag mest fram emot den sista flygningen med Enterprise den 23 april 2012. NASA håller på och fräschar sin äldsta rymdskyttel inför dess transport till Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum i New York.

The Space Shuttle Enterprise, the original NASA orbiter that paved the way for America’s successful space shuttle program, will officially arrive in New York City and mark the start of its historic journey to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum when it touches down at John F. Kennedy Airport on Monday, April 23. The shuttle will be welcomed by an assembled gathering of invited guests, including school children from across the tri-state area and elected and community leaders.

The Enterprise will depart Washington DC’s Dulles International Airport on the back of a NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), the same way it and its sister shuttles have made their way around the country during the decades of the Space Shuttle Program.

The flight, in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, is scheduled to occur between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. EDT. The exact route and timing of the flight depend on weather and operational constraints, including the on-time delivery of space shuttle Discovery to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., this week. If all goes as planned, the aircraft is expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the New York metropolitan area, including the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. When the flyover is complete, the SCA will land at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The ceremony will include remarks from Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Co-Chairman Charles de Gunzburg, President Susan Marenoff-Zausner, NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver and Executive Director of Port Authority Pat Foye.

Den sista delen av transporten blir kanske inte så heroisk, men den kommer att bli intressant att skåda.

Several weeks following the arrival, Enterprise will be demated from the SCA and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in June. The shuttle will then be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on exhibit to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion that will feature innovative elements in an exciting and immersive experience for visitors. The Intrepid continues to work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum’s space-related exhibits and education curriculum.

För oss Sci-Fi nördar så har Enterprise en särskild plats i våra hjärtan. När NASA skulle döpa den första rymdskytteln så drev Star Trek fans s.k. "Trekkies" igenom en kampanj att rymdskytteln skulle döpas efter Kapten Kirks fartyg NCC-1701 Enterprise.

Enterprise kom aldrig upp i rymden, men den lade grunden till rymdskyttelprogrammet och gav ett gott exempel på devisen "To boldly go where no man has gone before". Rymndskyttlarnas efterföljare är inte riktigt lika romantiska, med arbetsnamnet MPVC - Multi Purpose Crew Vehicle. Men uppdragen kan bli intressanta. Mars nästa!

Enterprise var först i luften och det är passande att hon också får vara den sista som flyger (med möjligt undantag för Endeavour).

Hmm... luftrummet över centrala Washington och Vita huset är efter 9-11 i normala fall avlyst för all flygtrafik. Det skulle därför inte förvåna mig om luftvärnet sattes i högsta beredskap utifall att Al Qaida kapat denna flygtransport. "Better safe than sorry" som amerikanarna brukar säga.
